‘ Sugar, sugar, honey, you are my candy girl…’ do you remember the song by the Archies.

We finally made it to Sugar in the Conrad Hotel located on Sheik Zayed Road. Months ago we received an email from them, that we were chosen to be one of their VIP members and received a members-only-card from them. Well to be honest, we only received the mail, but never got the card. As we were busy working and travelling we never made it there, until last night.
We had a dinner reservation at Marco Pierre White Grill and decided to have a pre-dinner drink at Sugar before that. As we did not have the actual member card, we hoped for the best and just walked in. The hostess at the entrance, dressed in an elegant black evening dress, welcomed us with a friendly smile and asked if we would join anyone in the bar. Once we told her that we were here for pre-dinner drinks only, she nodded her head, opened the door with the electronic key card and wished us a nice evening. The bar was not as crowded as we expected it to be.
We soon noticed that anyone could enter the bar, and that the members-only emails sent out to Dubai’s residents most probably was a promotion gag only. The atmosphere in the bar was great due to the up-beat music in the background, the elegant design of the bar and the friendly bar men and waiters.
We ordered two cocktails. A ‘Clover Club’ for the gentleman and ‘The last word’ for the lady. While the bar man made our drinks we decided to watch him and sat at the bar. All of a sudden however, a big group entered the bar (a birthday celebration) and took over the counter. We asked the waiter to serve our drinks at one of the private tables and observed the staff while waiting for the drinks.
Everyone seemed to be in a good mood. The bar men were smiling, the waiters seemed to dance along to the music while serving drinks and the bar manager was attentive and acknowledged all guests with a friendly smile.
Once the drinks were served we wished that we had time for another one before going upstairs to have dinner. The cocktails were just great.
Sugar is definitely not a bar for going out on a Thursday night, because it is quite small and if one goes there on a typical night out, pumping into the creme – de la creme of Dubai, it would loose it’s elegance and unique atmosphere. On a Friday for pre – dinner drinks however, I am happy to announce that Sugar has reached the top of our ‘most favorite pre-dinner drinks bar’ in Dubai.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
